Biotechnology Recycling Initiative
The USC Wrigley Institute for Environmental Studies’ Marine Science Center located on Catalina Island is turning to a small insect to help solve a big problem. By harvesting black soldier fly larvae, they are turning the facility’s food waste into a protein source rather than adding to the nearly full landfill.
Instead of shipping their food waste to a mainland landfill, they use an Ecovim 250 within the sustainability procedure to dehydrate and process the waste into biomass that is used to feed the fly larvae.
